Vakkom Moulavi Memorial Lecture at

Arabic Department, Kerala University

‘‘Ideas of Tradition and Modernity in

Contemporary Islamic Thinkers”

Arabic Department, Kerala University organised a Memorial Lecture on 25 February 2019
on the topic” Ideas of Tradition and Modernity in Contemporary Islamic Thinkers”.
Professor A. K. Ramakrishnan from Jawaharlal Nehru University talk on the topic.
He made notable remarks of Vakkom Moulalvi as a social engineer who considered
education and women empowerment as imperatives for social development. He inferred
that Vakkom Moulavi has depicted the word ‘feminism” for the first time in Malayalam in
his publication Deepika. Prof. Ramakrishnan mentioned that Vakkom Moulavi’s heredity
of knowledge is related to Mohammed Ridha Al-Shabibi who is an Iraqi national figure,
statesman, poet & educator and Al Manar magazine. He stated that the importance
of a personality can be understood only by analysing the social, economic & political
system during his/her period. The contributions of different Islamic thinkers were also
cited during the lecture. A. Suhair, the chairperson of Vakkom Moulavi Foundation also
talked about Vakkom Moulavi’s life and ideology.
