As a consequence we also have here - as is always the case with KNX - sensor-actuator
communication. The smart meter can be the sensor, transferring the measured data to a
logic gate or a tariff management module. A decision is made depending on the setpoint
value and as a reaction to this, an actuator or the load is switched on.

In the future one may imagine that the load in the building is not only controlled as
described above, but also from outside.
This requires - apart from a clear normative legislative framework - combination of smart
metering and smart grid. If in a certain network a high amount of renewable energy is
