ir C.V. Raman House dedicated one of its morning assemblies to
House Celeb R a T ions the great Indian physicist and the first Indian to have won the
Nobel Prize for Physics. The students spoke about the inspiring
Slife of Sir C. V. Raman and highlighted his achievements. The
House also celebrated the festivals Raksha Bandhan and Janmashtami
with much zeal and enthusiasm. Members of the House shared
interesting details about the rituals connected to these festivals. The
audience enjoyed catching a few glimpses from the life of Lord Krishna,
put up in the form of an enactment. The celebration culminated with
a Krishna bhajan, sung by the House choir. A short skit, carrying
the message of ‘Respecting the Elderly’ was also put up. The House
members of classes 1 and 2 educated everyone about the Lotus Temple
and shared information about the state of Assam. They spoke about the
locals and their customs, clothes, various dance forms and the cuisine.

y House organised an assembly on Raksha Bandhan. I
also took part in the presentation. My Housemates and
I shared lots of interesting trivia about the festival with
Mthe audience. Raksha Bandhan, also called Rakhi, is the
festival that celebrates the love and duty between brothers and sisters.
In simple words, Raksha Bandhan literally means "the tie or knot of
protection" in Sanskrit. In Indian tradition, the fragile thread of rakhi
is considered stronger than an iron chain as it binds together brothers
and sisters with mutual love and trust. On Raksha Bandhan, the
sister ties a rakhi (a sacred thread) on her brother's wrist. This
sir C.V. Raman symbolizes the sister's love and prayers for her brother's well-
being who vows to protect her. The festival is marked by several
House rituals, which vary regionally within India. Women shop for
rakhis or even make their own. A rakhi may be a simple thread,

woven and colourful; or may be intricate with
amulets and decoration on top of it. Typically, the
brother too shop for gifts for the sister, ahead of
Raksha Bandhan. The gift from the brother is a
simple thoughtful token of love. Raksha Bandhan
aims bring people together just like all other Indian
festivals. I am happy to say that our presentation
reflected our hard work and went well. We received
applause for speaking with confidence.
