The cratered peak of Mount
Vesuvius looms over the shattered
ruins of Pompeii, excavated from
volcanic ash 80 ft (25 m) deep.
The entire city was destroyed,
along with most of its citizens by
the eruption. If the volcano erupts
again, the modern city of Naples
could suffer the same fate.
