AFTER THE BLAST



                                                                                                 Before the catastrophic eruption of
                                                                                                 1991, Mount Pinatubo was a rugged peak
                                                                                                 covered by dense rainforest. The eruption
                                                                                                 emptied the magma chamber beneath the
                                                                                                 volcano, making most of the peak collapse
                                                                                                 into the void below. This formed a giant
                                                                                                 crater—a caldera—which soon filled with
                                                                                                 water to create Lake Pinatubo.
