Ibn Battuta wrote
about his travels
in a book called
the Rihla.
Ibn Battuta
In 1325, Ibn Battuta set off from
his native Morocco on a hajj
(Muslim pilgrimage) to the holy
city of MECCA (in modern-day
Saudi Arabia). Bitten by the
traveling bug, he stayed on the
road for nearly 30 years. His
adventures took him to India,
China, and all over the Muslim
world, including to the famed
city of Timbuktu. Ibn Battuta
also picked up at least eight
wives along the way!
Zheng He may
have visited up
to 30 countries.
Admiral Zheng He
Between 1405 and 1433, the Chinese admiral
Zheng He led seven expeditions to southern and
western Asia and east Africa, on behalf of three
different MING emperors. His huge fleet was
made up of more than 300 ships. Along the
way, Zheng He gave gifts of Chinese silk, gold,
and porcelain. He returned with foreign riches
for the emperor, including a pet giraffe.
