Atlantic Circuit of discovery

Buying our Southerly 480 was one of the best decisions we could make,
opening up to us a world of opportunity to cruise extensively. We had en-
joyed our previous smaller Southerly in the coastal waters around the UK
but felt limited by the shortness of the season. For us it was time to up a
gear, have a bigger yacht which could take us anywhere in comfort, with
systems on board to allow us to make longer passages with only the occa-
sional requirement to come in to port for provisions and fuel.
We were delighted to find the Discovery Yachts Group were taking on the
building of Southerly Yachts. Having a lifting keel was a priority and the pro-
spect of having the skilled workforce at Discovery adding their craftsman-
ship into a brand we loved could not be resisted. It was a pleasure to meet
the Discovery team and embark on the build process, working through all
the options to build our dream yacht.

Kered was launched at the end of
July in 2018. Shortly after the mast
was stepped was a significant mo-
ment for Sue. Standing on the fore-
deck, looking up at the rig she felt
Kered was destined to travel the
world and couldn’t wait to get start-
ed on a trip of a lifetime. The pro-
spect was exciting but also a little
daunting. How would we get on with
a larger more powerful yacht? Wing on Wing

With the summer drawing to a close there was much to be sorted if we
were to escape south away from a British winter. Our handover sail went
well as we were able to try out all the different sail combinations in gentle
breezes. Our shake down cruise took us down to Fowey in the West Coun-
try and on the way back we experienced an unexpected gale, allowing us to
gain rapid experience of sailing Kered downwind in gusts up to 39 knots.
Needless to say she performed superbly.
