The dog breeds listed in this index may be followed by any combination of the initials AKC (American
Kennel Club), FCI (Federation Cynologique Internationale—the World Canine Organization), and KC
(Kennel Club). The initials indicate which of these three international organizations recognize the breed.
Occasionally the AKC, FCI, and KC recognize the same breed but use a different name to the one used in
this book. This alternative name is also listed along with the initials of the organization that uses it. Some
breeds have been granted provisional acceptance by the FCI; these are indicated here as FCI*. Other
breeds have no initials following their name but may be recognized by other kennel clubs in their country
of origin and be in the approval process of one of the organizations listed here.
