               To make the negative past form, change nai → nakatta
               nomu → nomanai → namanakatta
               taberu → tabenai → tabenakatta


                   GRAMMAR NOTE Combining Sentences: Te-Form of

                                       Predicates

               When we discussed earlier how to combine two nouns using the particle to, a
               warning was given not to use this particle to combine anything else. Now we
               will learn how to combine sentences. To combine two sentences into one, change
               the predicate of the first sentence to the te-form.

                        Osoku natta. Gomen. I’m late. I’m sorry.
                    → Osoku natte, gomen. I’m sorry for being late.


               How do we make a te-form? There are different rules depending on the type of

               predicate (verb, adjective, or noun predicate.) For an adjective predicate, add -te
               to the adjective -ku form.
