For centuries, caravans carrying jade and tea passed through BHAMO (also spelt Bamaw
and Banmaw) on their way to the markets of southwest China. Today, this small town
on the eastern bank of the Ayeyarwady is a pleasantly relaxed place, punctuated with
aged rain trees, dark teak houses and busy markets.
The town certainly doesn’t make much of its waterfront, with busy Strand Road
mostly home to shops catering to farmers heading to the vegetable market that sets up
here each morning (Mon–Sat 6.30–8am). The main market, hidden away one block
east of the river, is also worth a look – though more for the quaint building,
surrounded by a small moat, than for the goods on sale.
