82 ATLAS OF THE WORLD’S STRANGEST ANIMALS
Red Kangaroo
Everything about the red kangaroo is big. They’re the largest living
marsupial, the largest Australian mammal and they have the ability
to jump 25ft (8m) in a single bound. When it comes to the
kangaroo’s young, though, these big mammals produce tiny, bean-
sized joeys.
Teeth
Four pairs of cheek teeth sit
on either side of the jaws.As
the front ones wear down,
they fall out. Those at the back
then move forwards to take
their place.
Pouch
A muscular ‘band’ keeps the
pouch tightly closed.This not
only prevents the joey from
falling out when its mother is
on the move, but ensures a
constant, temperature of
32˚C (90˚F).
