▷ Island Trekking
The islands once had numerous walking trails,
including the magnificent cobbled kalderímia.
Many were bulldozed during the 1980s and 90s,
but local enthusiasts have protected the
remaining paths, which have also been
waymarked and mapped. Another option is the
mountain ranges and gorges of Crete (p244),
or Corfu (p64), with its 220-km (137-mile) trail

from Corfu Town to Mount Pantokrator.
At their best, the aquamarine Greek
seas resemble a tropical paradise: think
pristine sands, glittering waters and
dramatic mountain backdrops. You’ll
find even committed landlubbers in
the water here, particularly when the
temperatures soar.
GREEK ISLANDS FOR
OUTDOOR
ACTIVITIES
On the Greek Islands adventures await even the most dedicated sun-
worshipper. The list starts, but doesn’t stop, at easy-breezy windsurfing,
night-time scuba-diving and trekking on centuries-old trails.
◁ Cycle the Cyclades
Take to the Cycladic hills for steep
but stunning village-to-sea ascents
and descents – Mílos, Náxos and
Páros provide some of the best
mountain climbs. Bikes can be rented
on most islands; alternatively take a
bike tour – try Naxos Bikes (www.
naxosbikes.com) or Paros Cycling
(www.paroscycling.com).
