GREEK ISLANDS
RAISE A GLASS
There’s far more to island drinking than retsína and ouzo; here, you’ll drink
the best wines and beers you’ve never heard of, all part of a gastronomic
revolution in Greece that has extended to alcohol. From microbreweries to
small-scale vintners, these are the tastes of the islands.
The Long Draught
Long, hot summers in the
Aegean have encouraged an
appetite for watery lagers
and pilsners, but local
microbreweries have led the
charge in putting ales, dark
beer and even white beer on
tap and on the menu. Top
microbreweries include
Corfu Beer, a microbrewery
pro ducing real ale, and the
Santorini Brewing Company,
with its distinctive donkey
logo (p212). Most breweries
around the islands offer tours,
or at least a free tasting.
Unpasteurized real
ale from Corfu Beer, best
consumed on the island
