                    At the top of the classification hierarchy is  the animal kingdom, which contains more  than 30 phyla. The other highly diverse  phyla aside from the chordates are usually  grouped together as “invertebrates”  because they have no backbones, although  this term has no meaning in classification.  They include arthropods (insects, spiders,  and crabs), mollusks, and worms.  Animals are grouped into phyla according  to their main features. Mammals and related  classes—including fish, birds, reptiles, and  amphibians—belong to the phylum  Chordat
