                                                                                             Theory: As a nunnery for the
                                                                                                  Virgins of the Sun
                                                                                             Some 100 skeletons were excavated from
                                                                                            Machu Picchu, and osteologist George Eaton
                                                                                             found about three-quarters of them to be
                                                                                            female. This sparked the theory that the city
                                                                                            was for the Virgins of the Sun, a holy order
                                                                                               of women dedicated to the Inca sun
                                                                                               god, Inti. Modern analysis found the
                                                                                                 skeletons to be roughly half
                                                                                                   male and half female.
