8 Zuiderzeemuseum
Enkhuizen was one of the towns whose economy was
based on fishing and which was devastated when its access
to the North Sea was blocked in 1932 by the construction
of a barrier dam, the Afsluitdijk (see p168). Enkhuizen is
today enjoying renewed prosperity with the opening of
the Zuiderzeemuseum complex and the restructuring of
the fishing port into a marina. The museum consists of an
open-air section in the form of a museum-park, and an . Houses from Urk
indoor area with a large number of exhibition spaces for Houses from the former island of
permanent displays and temporary presentations. Urk (see p330) have been rebuilt
here. Actors portray life at the
beginning of the 20th century.

Lime Kilns
Shells dredged from the sea bed were
burned in bottle-shaped lime kilns.
The resulting quicklime was then
used as an ingredient in mortar for
brickwork. These ovens come from
Akersloot in North Holland.
