n Dominican Church
The Dominicans began the construction of a
new church in 1250. It contained the shrine of
St Jacek, a place of mass pilgrimage. Opulent
mausolea, modelled on the Zygmunt Chapel
at Wawel, were added in the 17th century by
noble families, and in the 18th century the
church was furnished with late Baroque altars.
The fire of Krakow in 1850 destroyed the church
almost completely. It was rebuilt by 1872 and
today is an important evangelical centre which Cloister

. Zbaraski Chapel
The fine decoration of the chapel,
built in 1627 to 1633 by the Castelli
artists, is in sharp contrast with the
monumental forms of the altar and
tombs in black marble.
Tomb of General Jan Skrzynecki
This beautiful monument carved by Władysław
Oleszczyński commemorates the hero of the
November Uprising of 1830 (died 1860).
