The collection is on two floors. The second floor is a counterclockwise, chronological
arrangement of Japanese art as it developed from Jomon-era (from 10,000 BC) clay figures
to 19th-century ukiyo-e wood-block prints. In between is everything from calligraphy and
tea utensils to armor as well as textiles used in Noh and Kabuki. The first floor also works
best when viewed counterclockwise. Its rooms are themed, with stunning exhibits of
sculpture, lacquerware, swords, and Western-influenced modern art.
