                                      Trial of a Corpse
Fear of rival factions led the early popes to extra-
ordinary lengths. An absurd case took
place at the Lateran Palace in 897
when Pope Stephen VI tried the
                                      corpse of his predecessor,
                                      Formosus, for disloyalty to the
                                      Church. The corpse was found
                                      guilty, its right hand was
                                      mutilated, and it was thrown
                                      in to the Tiber.
