In 1989 the remains of the Rose
theatre, dating from Elizabethan
times, were discovered during
excavations ahead of building
work for a new office block.
The Rose, built in 1587, was
the first of the Bankside theatres,
and it staged plays by Shakes- The Shard, London’s tallest building, soaring above Tower Bridge
