Rainbow spring
One of the world’s largest hot springs,
Grand Prismatic Spring is located in
Yellowstone National Park. Explorers gave
the spring its name in 1871 after witnessing
its incredible prism of colors. Measuring
370 ft (113 m) wide and 121 ft (37 m) deep,
it releases 560 gallons (2,120 liters) of
water a minute.
FIRES OF HELL
Beppu in Japan is home to eight
fiery natural springs, known as
“hells” (jigoku). The Blood Pond
Hot Spring is the most famous
because of its steaming red
waters. This color comes from
high levels of iron in the area.
