Earth’s forests currently measure around
2
15 million sq miles (40 million km )—but
every year an area the size of a small
country is cleared to make room for people
to grow crops or graze animals. Trees are
also chopped down on an industrial scale
to provide wood and paper.
Almost half of the
forests in Australia
are in Queensland,
with much of the
land protected as
national parks.
Found mostly in Indonesia,
Cambodia, Thailand,
Myanmar, and Malaysia,
the rain forests of Southeast
Asia are the oldest tropical
forests on Earth.
