A cross between the Old English Mastiff and the Bulldog Historically a hunting dog, and later a farm guard
(opposite), the Bullmastiff was developed to be a gamekeeper’s dog, the Broholmer is now almost exclusively kept

The Tosa was developed from progressive crossbreeding
between Japanese fighting dogs and Western breeds such
as the Bulldog (opposite), Mastiff (see p.93), and Great Short coat
Dane (see p.96). Very large, strongly built, and possessing
a latent fighting instinct, the Tosa is considered to be a
dog that should only be owned by expert handlers.
