Many sharks are killed and their jaws sold to tourists
as souvenirs. Jaws of large sharks, like the great
white (pp. 28–31), fetch high prices. The sale of great
white jaws is now banned in South Africa.

The cartilaginous fibers
in shark fins are made into
soup, which some people regard as a
delicacy. The dried fins are soaked and
repeatedly boiled to extract the mass
of gelatinous fibers. Many other
ingredients are then added
to these noodlelike fibers to
give the soup some taste.

Shark oil is used in costly
skin creams that are meant
to prevent wrinkles and signs of
aging. But other creams based on
natural plant oils are just as effective.
