Pronunciation
               In this phrasebook, the Portuguese has been written in a sys-
               tem of imitated pronunciation so that it can be read as though
               it were English, bearing in mind the notes on pronunciation
               given below:
                 a     as in hat
                 ay    as in may                            HOW THE LANGUAGE WORKS
                 eh    as in get
                 g     as in goat
                 i     as in it
                 ī     as the ‘i’ sound in might
                 J     as the ‘s’ sound in pleasure
                 o     as in not
                 oh    like the exclamation oh
                 oo    as in boot
                 ow    as in now                             N
               In words such as não [nowng] and bem [bayng], the final ‘g’ in
               the pronunciation signifies a nasal sound and should barely be
