Salmon
F or a salmon, life is one long journey. It starts out in a stream
or lake, but after about a year, the young fish heads downriver
and out to sea. For the next few years it hunts smaller fish and grows
stronger. Then, one summer day, it decides that it’s time to go back.
The returning salmon has a dangerous journey ahead. It has to fight
the river’s powerful current, leaping and splashing up waterfalls, and
avoid hungry bears. If it survives these dangers, the fish arrives back
where it hatched with thousands of other salmon. Now the salmon
can lay their eggs and breed. Sockeye salmon, exhausted, die after
breeding. Their amazing journey is over, and the cycle starts again.
