Bat
M any people think bats are spooky, and
children and adults dress as them for
Halloween, but bats are amazing animals. They are
the only mammals that can fly. The flaps of skin between
their fingers turn their hands into wings. At night, insect-
eating bats make high-pitched squeaks that bounce off
moths and other insects. The echoes help the bats find them.
Not all bats eat insects. Flying foxes are giant bats that love fruit,
especially mangoes and bananas. By day they sleep upside down,
wrapping their wings around themselves like a blanket. Groups of
them hang from branches like decorations on a Christmas tree!
A Lyle’s flying fox has a wingspan of 35 in (90 cm)—
that’s wider than many doorways.
