Parrot
A
flash of bright color through the leaves of a rain forest
tree may be a parrot. You’ll know for sure when you hear
its screeching calls. These birds fly around in noisy flocks, searching
for ripe fruits to eat. Largest and noisiest of all are the macaws.
A massive beak allows macaws to crack the toughest nuts, but
also to gently peel fruits.
Macaws are among the world’s smartest birds. Some even learn to
copy human words! In a traditional myth of the Maya people of
Mexico and Central America, there is a proud macaw god named
Vucub-Caquix. The macaw tried to rule the world, until he was
defeated by two heroic brothers.
Macaws eat mud! No one is sure why,
but it might be a source of salt.
