Owl
I n the inky darkness of the night, owls go hunting. Their huge
eyes can spot movement in the dimmest light. Owls can’t move
their eyes, so to look in different directions, they turn their whole
head. They can twist it almost all the way around! Their keen ears
are hidden below their feathers. The tufts that look like ears on owls
like the eagle owl are actually just bundles of feathers.
Eagle owls are the largest of all owls. In a sudden, silent swoop, they
grab prey as big as foxes and young deer. Super-soft edges to their
feathers help them fly without a noise, and sharp, curved talons hold
the meal tight as they carry it away.
In Ancient Greece, the goddess of wisdom,
Athena, was often shown with an owl.
