Parrotfish
C runch … crunch … crunch … Swim over a coral reef and
you might hear parrotfish feeding. These noisy eaters munch
on algae, which they scrape off rocks with their sharp beaks. The
sound? As they remove the algae, the fish chomp into some of the
crunchy coral at the same time. As it passes through the fish, it is
broken down into sand—many white beaches are actually piles
of parrotfish poop!
When the spotted parrotfish is young it is orange and white, but as
it grows it becomes brown and turns into an adult female. It hasn’t
finished changing, though. As the female grows she becomes more
colorful and turns into a male!
Some parrotfish make a sleeping bag
out of slime to spend the night in!
