Sloth
H igh up in the rain forest is where sloths feel happiest. They
edge through trees in slow motion, using their curved claws
to grip the branches. Hooked on like this, they will hang around in
the same tree for hours. They’re not lazy, but it takes them a
long time to digest their diet of leaves and twigs.
Three-toed sloths, such as the brown-throated sloth,
have thick, shaggy fur. Tiny plantlike algae grow
on their hair, turning it green, and it is even home
to its own type of sloth moth. About once a
week, sloths make the long journey all the
way down to the bottom of the trees.
Why? To go to the bathroom!
