Hare
L ong back legs make hares great runners. They race across
the ground at up to 47 mph (75 kph) to escape danger.
The world’s fastest human sprinters can reach only 28 mph (45 kph).
To get a head start, hares also have big ears, which help them hear
danger a long way off.
The Arctic hare lives in the frozen north, where there are no trees.
It has a clever disappearing trick. In summer, it is brown or gray, but
in winter, the hare turns white to match the snow and ice. Then its
enemies can’t see it. The hare’s main predators are Arctic foxes and
snowy owls—both of which also turn white in winter!
In the worst snowstorms, the Arctic hare
digs a snow shelter to keep warm.
