Kiwi

                         A

kiwi is round, fat, and fluffy. You can’t really see its wings, and
it can’t fly. In New Zealand, where kiwis live, the Maori people

tell a story about how the kiwi lost its wings. The god of the forest
asked all the birds to come down from the sky and eat the bugs that

were attacking the trees. The only bird to agree to give up its wings
                         and help was the kiwi.

Kiwis hunt at night. Their eyesight is poor, so they find creepy-crawlies
to eat by smell and feel. Unusually, a kiwi’s nostrils are at the tip of its

bill, which it keeps poking into the earth as it walks to sniff out food.

Kiwis may seem shy, but they aren’t pushovers.

They can kick and slash with their sharp claws.
