M eerkats are great team players. Their gang is called a mob
and has as many as forty meerkats in it. Most end up on
babysitting duty. The adults take turns being guards. The lookouts
stand up on their back legs or climb a rock to get a better view.
Meerkats have their own special language. Each cheep, squeak, yelp,
and bark is like a word. One kind of bark means there is danger in
the sky—like a hawk or an eagle. Another bark says to watch out for
a snake or wild dog on the ground. All the meerkats have different
calls, so they can recognize their friends.
