Dragonfly
D ragonfly-like insects first took to the skies 300 million years
ago, which means they were on Earth long before birds or
dinosaurs. These super-fast fliers have four wings that can each
move in a different direction, enabling them to hover, fly upside
down, and even travel backward. You will usually find them hanging
still in the air above a pond, before zipping off to a new spot.
A dragonfly’s favorite food is other insects. It spots them using its
huge eyes, which lock onto their target while they chase it. With nine
out of every ten attacks ending in a kill, dragonflies are some of the
best predators in the animal kingdom.
