Wasp
A
wasp sting is a painful lesson, so we quickly learn not
to make them angry. A wasp’s sharp stinger injects
venom, making our skin itch and burn. Some have
black and yellow stripes to warn attackers
away, but wasps usually only sting for
defense or to kill prey.
Tiny cuckoo wasps are less than
0.4 in (1 cm) long, and their
body shines with metallic colors.
Their young are parasites—
they feed on other living
insects. If you zoom in, you
can see that the wasps are
covered with dimples. These
pits protect them from the
stings of other insects, which
are trying to protect their young
from the wasps.
