Polar bear
T he polar bear is a giant. It can weigh about
1,750 lb (800 kg) and its huge feet leave
footprints larger than dinner plates. Super-thick fur
keeps the bear cozy in its Arctic home. The fur looks
as white as snow, but it is actually see-through! It
just seems white because of the way each hair
reflects light. Underneath, the bear’s skin is black—
this helps it soak up the sun’s rays to stay warm.
These bears crunch across snow and paddle in icy
water for days, hunting for seals to eat. They use
their nose to sniff out underground seal dens. If
they find one, they have to dig out the seal quickly
before it escapes.
