Reindeer

F ew animals live in the freezing Arctic, but for

reindeer this world of ice and snow is home. They
roam in restless herds that are always on the move, making long

journeys called migrations to find fresh plants to eat. People have
tamed reindeer in Russia and northern Europe. The tough animals

pull sleighs and are kept for their meat and skins. Reindeer in
North America are called caribou. These creatures are wilder

                and more afraid of humans.

Reindeer have wide feet that stop them from sinking when

they crunch across the snow. You can hear them coming,
as their feet make a loud clicking noise when they walk.
