D oes this iguana remind you of a dinosaur?
Iguanas definitely look fierce, with their
spiky scales and sharp claws. Most iguanas
live in hot forests and deserts. However,
unlike every other lizard on Earth, the
marine iguana lives by the sea.
Marine iguanas are found only on the
Galápagos Islands, near Ecuador. They
eat algae, and to reach this unusual
food they climb onto slippery rocks
when the tide goes out. Big iguanas
actually dive into the water and feed
below the waves, lashing their tail from
side to side to swim. They swallow a lot
of seawater as they eat, and to get rid
of the extra salt, they sneeze it out!
Each island’s marine iguanas are a
different color. Those on Española Island
are brightest, with red and green scales.
