Octopus
I magine having eight arms like an octopus! It uses them to move
around the sea floor, coiling and winding them around rocks. Each
arm has more than two hundred white suckers that taste, feel, and
stick to things like superglue! To swim, octopuses pump
water through their soft body. When they squeeze
the water out, they take off like a balloon zooming
around a room.
Octopuses are some of the smartest animals in
the ocean. The common octopus holds stones to
make body armor, and in captivity it can solve
puzzles and escape mazes. Sailors in northern
Europe used to tell tales about a giant, octopus-like
sea monster that could sink ships. They called it
the “kraken.”
