Red panda

T he red panda looks very cute. It has a teddy-bear face, furry

coat, and bushy tail. But is it a panda? Or a bear? Neither!
Scientists put the red panda in a group all on its own. However, if

you think it looks like a red raccoon, you are close—raccoons
are some of its closest relatives.

The red panda’s home is the mountain forests of Asia. There you can
hear it twittering and making a grunting noise called a “huff-quack.”

Its long tail helps the red panda balance on branches, and
it has a special trick to help it get around—it can

twist its ankles around to point backward.
This allows it to climb down

                                                                  trees headfirst!
