Beaver
B ite marks on fallen trees are a clue that beavers are around.
Their orange front teeth are very sharp for chewing wood,
which they eat and use for construction. Beaver families are great
builders. First, they block a stream, dragging branches across and
pushing mud into the gaps to make a dam. Water is trapped
behind the dam and makes a pond where they can swim.
Their paddle-like tails and webbed feet are perfect for
pushing them along.
Next, the beavers build a home called a lodge,
complete with a secret underwater entrance. If a
beaver sees danger, it makes a warning splash with
its tail. When the others hear this, they all swim inside.
