Green sea turtle, tropical Atlantic,
Pacific, and Indian Oceans
S ea turtles are super swimmers, with smooth shells and long
flippers. They travel huge distances as they cruise through the
ocean. Some sea turtles chase jellyfish, shrimp, or crabs to eat, but
green sea turtles graze on sea grass, which grows on the seabed in
underwater lawns. Green sea turtles get their name because their
fat is green!
Female sea turtles return to the same beach where they hatched to
lay their eggs. They haul themselves onto the beach at night to dig a
nest in the sand. In it they lay about one hundred white eggs, which
look just like ping-pong balls. Seven or eight weeks later, the tiny
babies wriggle out and dash to the sea.
