The shallow waters of Shark Bay in Western
GAME-CHANGERS Australia support a life form that has existed
on Earth for billions of years—stromatolites. These muddy-looking lumps have been built up by
cyanobacteria—simple microbes that turn air and water into sugar using sunlight. This process of
photosynthesis creates most of the food that animals need and releases the oxygen they breathe.
