THE DECISIVE
MOMENT
The French photographer Henri
Cartier-Bresson invented the concept
of the “decisive moment”—the exact
point in time that the visual elements
of a scene align to create a strong
composition. The term influenced
photographers throughout the
20th century. Cartier-Bresson used
manual film cameras, so capturing
the decisive moment was entirely
down to his skill and reflexes. Today,
using Continuous Drive (see p.89), it
is possible to shoot multiple photos
and pick the one that works best.
THE RESULT
The shot has depth, thanks to the unusual viewpoint and the long,
raking shadows. Shooting the scene using an overhead reflective
surface has also introduced a pleasing visual ambiguity.
