BOKEH
Bokeh is a Japanese word for the aesthetic qualities
of the out-of-focus areas of an image. A telephoto
lens used at its maximum aperture produces pleasing
bokeh. A lens creating poor bokeh will produce
harsh, out-of-focus areas with obvious colored
fringing around any highlights. A lens producing
good bokeh creates smooth, out-of-focus areas
that are not distracting. Factors such as lens
elements, whether the lens being used is a prime
or a zoom, and the number of aperture blades all
affect the quality of bokeh. Mirror and Petzval
lenses produce a unique bokeh style (see p.107).

This shallow depth of field would not normally be possible without stitching ISO
together in postproduction (see p.170), particularly with a wide-angle lens. M f/4.5 1/40 400
