130 APPLYING | POLARIZING FILTERS
IMPROVING VISIBILITY
Polarizing filters are used to reduce the visibility of removing the surface glare. A polarizing filter works
reflections on the surfaces of shiny subjects, such best when it is at an angle of about 35 degrees to
as glossy paint, water, or glass. As with polarized the subject’s surface. You control the effects by
sunglasses, this helps to increase color saturation, turning the front ring of the filter. As it turns, the
making colors look more vibrant. They also make the effect changes from minimum (no effect) to
surface of water or glass look more transparent by maximum (full polarization).
USE A TRIPOD FIT THE FILTER ROTATE THE FILTER
Since you will be taking a longer If you have a UV filter fitted to Look through the viewfinder and
exposure than usual, mount your your lens, remove this first before slowly turn the filter’s front ring. As it turns,
camera on a tripod to avoid the risk attaching the polarizing filter. (Polarizing any glare from your subject should fade
of camera shake. Look through the filters can be difficult to take off when in and out. Stop rotating when the glare
viewfinder and position your camera. they are attached to a UV filter.) vanishes completely.
SHOOT AND REVIEW
Take some test shots where there
is significant surface glare—one polarized
and one unpolarized—and compare them,
then increase or decrease the polarization
as you see fit by rotating the filter ring.
