even in 1942, new Yorkers saw in the new Year by watching
the times Square ball drop. though the US joined World
War ii in 1941, it was only decided after 1942 that the ball
shouldn’t be illuminated as it would make an easy target
for enemy bombers. the iconic ball first fell in 1906,
made of iron and wood and adorned with 100
25-watt light bulbs. Until 1995, it was lowered
manually by six men and a guy
with a stopwatch.
