The Apotheosis of the Renaissance
Many prominent artists were employed to decorate the museum’s
interior. As part of an extravagant decorative scheme, the
Main entrance Hungarian painter Michael
from Maria- Munkácsy contributed a
Theresien-Platz fabulous trompe l’oeil ceiling
painting for the main
Rotunda staircase, depicting The
Apotheosis of the Renaissance
(1890). It features Leonardo,
Raphael, Michelangelo,
Veronese, Titian and
their models, all presided
over by Pope Julius II.
