Vienna emerged from the Dark Ages as a German outpost
controlled by Babenberg dukes, who brought great
prosperity to the city by the 12th century. There followed
a period of social disorder and intermittent Bohemian rule
known as the Interregnum. Vienna fell into Habsburg hands
in the 13th century and remained the cornerstone of their
domains until the dynasty’s downfall in 1918.
From 1452 until 1806, Habsburg rulers were 1637–57 Emperor
